DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) Scan
Bone density tests determine the bone mass of the spine, hip, or wrist to determine if you have osteoporosis or are at risk of osteoporosis. Bone density tests are simple, safe, and painless. Most tests take approximately 15-20 minutes to perform.
Your results are compared with those of healthy individuals at their peak bone mass through an extensive database. This information can help your doctor diagnose osteoporosis or determine whether you need to take steps to protect your bone health.
Normal bone is dense and strong. Bone with osteoporosis has thinned and become porous, making it more likely to break. The bone density test measures the thickness or density of your bones. If you are concerned about your bone mass, contact your doctor to discuss your need for this quick and easy test.
Screening vs. Diagnostic TestingYou may have had a screening exam performed on your heel at a doctor's office or at a health fair. These units are helpful in detecting the possibility of osteoporosis, however it should not take the place of a diagnostic exam. The technology in use at Cameron is very sensitive and reliable, producing more detailed and conclusive results.
ResultsAt Cameron, Dexa scans are recorded digitally. They can be viewed on-screen with our state-of-the-art Picture Archive Communication System (PACS) within minutes. A radiologist views and interprets the results. A report will be sent to your doctor, who then will explain the results to you.
