Cameron Hospital Keeping a Watchful Eye on Influeza A (H1N1) Virus

Physicians and staff at Cameron Memorial Community Hospital are closely monitoring reports and alerts regarding the Influenza A (H1N1) virus from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization, as well as conditions and reportable cases in the area. One case of the H1N1 virus has been reported in South Bend, Indiana by the Indiana Department of Health.

“We’ve assembled our Emergency Preparedness Task Force at the hospital as a precautionary measure, and have included Bill Brown of the County’s Emergency Management Agency and Tom Friend, head of the Health Department,” said Cameron Hospital spokesperson Kirk Singer. “This committee has the responsibility of closely monitoring health conditions and making appropriate plans should the H1N1 virus become an issue in the Steuben County area. We have a plan in place and will continue to monitor the situation.”

“As reported earlier by Dr. Ted Crisman, Health Officer for the Steuben County Health Department, we have not been made aware of any reportable cases thus far in Steuben County,” said Singer. “However, our physicians and nurses will continue to monitor patients for symptoms that might indicate the presence of this virus, and we will report any known or suspected cases to state and local health officials.”

Singer added, “We at Cameron concur with recent statements by local, state and federal health officials that this is a time of concern, but not a time of alarm. It’s a time to be prepared, and a time to continue to closely monitor the ongoing situation as it pertains to the communities we serve.”
