Cameron Announces Site Location for New Hospital

Following more than a year and a half of fact finding and deliberation, the announcement was made at a press conference held at the hospital on December 18th that the new Cameron Hospital would be located at the hospital’s present site, 416 East Maumee St. The announcement of the site of the new hospital is the first step in planning for the new facility, which will replace the current hospital, originally founded in 1926.

Ellen Bisson, Cameron’s Vice President and Interim CEO, was on hand at the press conference to make the initial announcement. “We’re pleased to announce that the board of directors has chosen our present location on East Maumee Street in downtown Angola for the site of the new Cameron Hospital,”she said. “This decision was based on a recommendation by the hospital's Construction Committee, which took a number of factors into consideration.

“Our present location maintains our position in the very center of Steuben County and will allow us to continue to be accessible to our patients in Fremont, Hamilton, Orland, Pleasant Lake, Ashley, Hudson and all points in between, as well as those who live in adjacent counties, and in southern Michigan and northwestern Ohio,” she said. “Our present location also secures our Critical Access Hospital status with the federal government, which allows us to remain financially viable and to serve the community well into the future.

“In addition, by maintaining our present location, Cameron will be a major contributor to the City of Angola’s new Downtown Revitalization Plan,” continued Ellen. “As part of the city’s plan, Cameron Hospital has been designated as a major anchor of the downtown area. And we’re excited that the new Cameron Hospital will play an important role in bringing new life to the city that has been our home for more than eighty years,” she concluded.

When asked the purpose for the new hospital, Ken Dunlap, hospital board member and Construction Committee Chair replied, “Many parts of the present hospital are fifty plus years old. In addition, over the years the hospital has been added onto numerous times. We’ve finally come to the place where facility replacement is necessary. Even extensive renovation would not be sufficient to correct infrastructure issues and basic systems that are inadequate to support new technology.”

Angola Mayor Richard Hickman praised the hospital’s decision to remain in the downtown Angola area. “A community like ours cannot survive, let alone thrive without great healthcare,” he said. “This community is very fortunate to have the healthcare we have at Cameron Hospital. We applaud Cameron’s decision.”
