Cameron Installs Pyxis MedStation

Cameron Memorial Community Hospital, Angola, recently integrated a new medication management system designed to improve collaboration between pharmacists and nurses. The Pyxis MedStation also contains features intended to increase patient safety and efficiency.

The Pyxis MedStation automated medication management system, a product of Cardinal Health, electronically generates patient medication lists and can display the status of orders in the pharmacy's electronic order. The Pyxis MedStation system also provides profile-based medication dispensing and includes the Pyxis BioID, a fingerprint verification function. The product features electronic tracking and documentation, with a computer interconnectivity between the pharmacy and nursing.

Cameron’s new Pyxis system has advanced reporting capabilities and warning systems that alert users to potential medical errors prior to dispensing medications. Additionally, the Pyxis MedStation system incorporates quarterly updated drug and patient information.

"Our new Pyxis system is a win-win for both the hospital and for the patients we serve," said Andrew Aldred, PharmD, director of Cameron’s pharmacy. "In today's health care environment, a successful patient-care experience depends on the collaborative efforts of all of the departments which provide care. The Pyxis MedSystem allows the pharmacy to work closely with the nurses in Med/Surg to dispense physician-ordered medications to patients quickly and efficiently. It also helps us to ensure patient safety with its safeguards against medication errors,” he said.
