The Genesis Center Sends Infants Swaddling Home with SleepSacks

The Genesis Birthing Center at Cameron Memorial Community Hospital is now sending every infant home with a sleep sack that provides safety and comfort to babies while they sleep.

The Genesis Center selected the 2-in-1 SleepSack Swaddle designed by a father who lost a daughter to SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). These are being purchased from Halo Innovations and are being used in hospital nurseries nationwide.

SIDS is the sudden unexpected death of an infant that occurs generally from one month to one year of age that remains unexplained, even after an autopsy and death scene investigation. One way to help reduce the possibility of SIDS is to replace loose blankets that can cover a baby’s face and interfere with breathing, with a sleep sack. These sacks which are recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Consumer Products Safety Commission, keep babies cozy, warm and safe. Parents report their babies sleep better in these sacks since they stay covered throughout the night.

The staff at Cameron’s Genesis Center provides parents with ”baby-care” education updates before discharge from the hospital which includes a list of safe sleeping tips for babies. First and foremost the baby is to sleep on his or her back. The side and tummy positions are not safe alternatives. Use of a wearable blanket or other type sleeper is also recommended over blankets.

“We feel these sleep sacks are so important,” said Tonya Alleshouse, RN and Obstetrics Clinical Coordinator at Cameron Hospital. “When an infant is being a little fussy, they often settle down once they are swaddled and feel the comfort of the sleep sack. The moms and dads have told us how much safer they feel with their babies wearing the sleep sack at night and nap time.”

The Genesis Center offers the sleep sack in a heavier material during the winter months, and a light-weight model for the warmer seasons.
