Do I Need a Sleep Study?

If you’re wondering whether you might need a sleep study, there are several signs and symptoms that could indicate a potential sleep disorder, making it worth discussing with a healthcare provider. We met with Cindy Reese, Cameron’s Respiratory and Sleep Center Director, to find out what symptoms to look out for.

Excessive Sleepiness During the Day

  • Struggling to stay awake during the day, even after a full night’s sleep.
  • Dozing off during activities like reading, watching TV, while driving, or any time you take a moment to sit down.

Loud Snoring or Gasping for Air

  • Loud, persistent snoring is a common sign of sleep apnea, especially if you or your partner notice pauses in breathing or gasping during sleep.

Morning Headaches or Dry Mouth

  • Frequently waking up with headaches or a dry mouth can suggest that you’re not getting proper oxygen flow during sleep.

Difficulty Falling or Staying Asleep

  • Persistent problems with either falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up too early.

Frequent Waking During the Night

  • Waking up multiple times for no apparent reason, such as needing to use the bathroom or due to discomfort.

Restless Leg Syndrome

  • An uncontrollable urge to move your legs, especially in the evening or while trying to sleep.

Unexplained Fatigue

  • If you’re consistently tired despite getting a reasonable amount of sleep, it may indicate a deeper sleep problem that a sleep study could help diagnose.

If you are experiencing one or more of any of the symptoms listed above and they’re affecting your daily life, a sleep study may be helpful.  Speaking with Cameron’s Sleep Therapy team can help pinpoint issues like sleep apnea, insomnia, narcolepsy, restless legs syndrome, and more. It may be recommended to complete an at-home study or one at the hospital.

The Cameron Sleep Center offers sleep testing that is designed to be comfortable and secure. The tests are conducted by professional technicians who are trained in the most recent technical advances of sleep diagnostic studies. If you aren’t getting the sleep you need, talk to your doctor about participating in a sleep study. Whatever sleep-related issue you may be experiencing, Cameron is here to support you.
