Managing Flu Season
As flu cases continue to rise in our area, it is more important than ever to take steps to protect yourself and your loved ones. Our urgent care providers have shared some practical advice to help you stay healthy and safe this flu season.
The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness and, in some cases, lead to hospitalization or complications. Common symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, chills, and fatigue. The flu spreads mainly through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks.
Cameron’s Urgent Care team wanted to share their best tips and preventative measures for managing cold and flu season.
Preventive Measures:
- Get Vaccinated: The flu vaccine is your best defense against the virus. It can reduce the severity of symptoms, if you do get sick, and help prevent complications.
- Practice Good Hygiene: Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use hand sanitizer when soap and water are not available. Avoid touching your face and covering your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze.
- Boost Your Immunity: Eat a balanced diet, stay hydrated, exercise regularly, and get enough sleep to support your immune system.
Tips from Our Urgent Care Providers:
- Recognize Warning Signs: Seek medical attention if you experience difficulty breathing, persistent chest pain, confusion, or severe dehydration. These could indicate complications that require prompt care. If you are experiencing these symptoms, go to the Emergency Department.
- Stay Home When Sick: If you feel unwell, stay home from work, school, and social activities to prevent spreading the flu to others.
- Seek Timely Treatment: If you develop flu symptoms, especially if you are in a high-risk group (young children, elderly, pregnant women, or individuals with chronic health conditions), contact your healthcare provider promptly. Antiviral medications may reduce the severity and duration of the flu, if taken within 48 hours of onset symptoms.
Preventing the spread of the flu is a shared effort. Employers can support vaccination programs and encourage flexible sick leave policies. Schools and public spaces can promote good hygiene practices and provide hand sanitizers. By taking preventive measures and seeking timely medical care when needed, we can work together to reduce the impact of the flu in our community.
Your health is Cameron’s priority. Let’s navigate this flu season safely and responsibly.
